Hecate, also spelled Hekate, is a goddess in ancient Greek religion and mythology. She is usually shown holding a pair of torches, a key, snakes, or dogs, and in later times, she is shown as having three bodies. She is sometimes linked to crossroads, entrances, night, light, magic, protection from witchcraft, the Moon, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, graves, ghosts, necromancy, and sorcery. In Hesiod’s Theogony, written in the 8th century BCE, she first appeared as a goddess of great honor who ruled over the sky, the earth, and the sea. Scholars don’t agree on where she came from, but the witches of Thessaly and the Carian Greeks of Asia Minor in Lagina were big fans of hers and built an important shrine to her there.
