In the Neopagan religion of Wicca, a Book of Shadows is a book that has religious text and instructions for magic rituals. Since the 1970s, when it was first thought of, it has become a part of many pagan practices and paths. Gerald Gardner, a Wiccan leader, made the most well-known Book of Shadows in the late 1940s or early 1950s. He used it first in his Bricket Wood coven and then in other covens he started in the decades that followed. Other Wiccan traditions, like Alexandrian Wicca and Mohsianism, also use the Book of Shadows. The idea of the Book of Shadows spread among solitary practitioners who were not part of older, initiatory Wiccan traditions after books came out in the 1970s that taught people how to start following non-initiatory Wicca.
